How Can a Disability Personal Trainer Customise Workouts Around Prosthetics?

At FitStrong, we work with people of all abilities. Every workout is tailored to your needs, combining biomechanics expertise with prosthetic considerations to train with care and moving in ways that support real-life function.

Matching Movement to Your Prosthetic

Different prosthetics affect the body in different ways. Whether you use a below-knee, above-knee or upper-limb prosthetic, balance and load shift differently: above-knee prosthetics demand extra core engagement while below-knee fittings alter socket pressure. Movement needs to be aligned with what your body can manage.
We look at joint movement, muscle strength and limb control before each session. That includes reviewing prosthetic fit and alignment in consultation with your prosthetist to ensure exercises do not exacerbate pressure points. Some prosthetics need more stability. We train with those realities in mind.
This means we might adapt a movement to reduce pressure or shift load. For example, we might perform seated leg presses instead of standing squats. That way you’re training efficiently without causing fatigue or irritation.

What Makes an Effective Disability Personal Trainer?

A disability personal trainer depends on biomechanics as well as collaboration. Our trainers liaise with physiotherapists and prosthetic technicians when clients have recent adjustments or healing wounds, to adapt programmes promptly. We track progress and adjust your program regularly. The goal is never to force movement; it is to build strength through safe, evidence-based methods.

Advanced Equipment for Training

Each session uses bands, machines or Olympic-style training techniques as needed. We also adopt targeted resistance approaches shown to improve gait symmetry and reduce metabolic cost in lower-limb amputees.
Our sessions can take place in a gym, at home or in a community centre approved under FitStrong’s NDIS accreditation. All are part of our personal training NDIS services and are invoiced directly under participants’ existing support budgets, ensuring seamless integration with funding.

Final Thoughts

The right training makes movement safer and more effective. Working with our disability personal trainer builds confidence and independence as abilities evolve. We adapt and build confidence with each exercise.
